A contribution to the Studies in Material Culture Series
by Robin Tomens (London, UK)
I am very pleased to be able to add this piece by British visual poet and artist Robin Tomens to Studies in Material Culture (SiMCS).
Asemic Front readers will likely recall his previous submissions in Part I, many of which are grounded in concrete poetry. Thus, he is attuned to the concept of "language as material" that helps form the basis of the SiMCS specifically.
In a note, Robin Tomens explains the work above is on a paper background and is his altered photo of books. For me, the subject choice is perfect: The book is a three-dimensional material language construct. The aesthetic choices for the photo are made carefully. The structure and forms in the image explore the nature of this materiality. As the SiMCS continues, I hope we can deepen and expand this meditation.
